Pros

  • There are no limits in terms of what movie you can watch - as long as you pick something that's on Netflix, you can watch it via Netflix Party.
  • The app is perfect for when you want to be together with friends and watch movies. The concept is just so solid and so filled with potential that it is almost bound to be a hit.
  • The timing of this app's boom and the subsequent COVID-19 pandemic couldn't be better.

Cons

  • There is text chat only. This means you actually have to type out your reactions.
  • It only works for Netflix; hopefully, services for more apps, like Hulu or Amazon, will come in the future.
  • As of right now, the App is limited to Google Chrome or Opera browsers on a computer. It doesn't work on tablets or phones.
  • Customizability options are limited - you can only create your own user name or icon.
  • There are still many technical kinks that need to be worked out.

Netflix Party is a social addition to Netflix. It allows you to watch Netflix while chatting with your friends or a random group of strangers.

Netflix Party can be installed via a relatively simple process on either Google Chrome or Opera browsers. It essentially acts as an extension from there. Once enabled, you can watch a movie with family, friends, or strangers. The programs allows movies and television shows to be synced up to the second, enabling you to talk with others about what's happening while you watch. You can chat with text, GIFS, or Emojis. You can also hide the chat button and just stick to watching the video or chatting with someone over the phone while you watch.

Once you install the app, you can use it by either creating your own Netflix Party, then inviting friends, or by joining an already existing Netflix Party. Inviting someone to join your Party is as simple as copying an App and messaging it to the person in question.

From a technical perspective, the app brags that it keeps movies and televisions shows completely in-sync across numerous devices, allowing for by-the-second synchronization. The app is relatively new and only began to be viewed publicly in 2020. However, it's popularity soared during the COVID-19 pandemic, when users who were stuck in their homes wanted to watch television but still feel a social connection to others. At the moment, Netflix Party says that they have over 10,000,000 users.

Some issues remain in the software. Chat will occasionally overlap, although Netflix Party has said on their website that they are aware of the issue and working on fixing it. Furthermore, when you type, the words you type don't always appear instantly. This can be a huge problem if you are trying to comment on something that happens in a split second or gasp with your friends at the latest twist or turn in the show you are watching. This bug may mean that you chose to either talk on the phone while watching or use another chat service, like texting or Facebook. This still means the app has a great purpose, as it allows users to watch a show together, perfectly synced, but it does create some additional problems for in-app utilization.

Pros

  • At the moment, the app is completely free to use and there are no additional ads.
